Nobody tells you this, but the hardest part of CrossFit is not the workout. It is the fifteen minutes before your first class, sitting in your car on Lancaster Avenue, wondering if everyone inside is going to be fitter than you.
Let us take the mystery out of it. Here is exactly what happens during your first hour of CrossFit in Ardmore — minute by minute — so the only surprise left is how normal it all feels.
Before you walk in: what to bring
Keep it simple. You need:
- Comfortable workout clothes you can move in
- A pair of athletic shoes — flat-soled is nice, but anything works for day one
- A water bottle
- Zero experience. Really. Your first class focuses on technique, not intensity.
That is the whole list. No special gear, no prerequisites, no fitness test at the door. Show up about ten minutes early so your coach can say hello and learn a little about you.
Your first hour, minute by minute
Every class at CrossFit Main Line follows the same coach-led structure, whether it is your first day or your five hundredth. Here is how the hour unfolds.
The whiteboard brief
The class gathers around the whiteboard and your coach walks through the plan for the day: what the warm-up looks like, what skill you will practice, what the workout is, and — most importantly — how it can be scaled. You will hear options for every movement before you touch a barbell. Nothing in the hour is a surprise after this brief.
The warm-up
Next comes a guided warm-up. This is not five bored minutes on a treadmill — it is specific preparation for the movements coming later, led by the coach, done together as a group. It is also where the room loosens up socially. Expect people to introduce themselves. That is normal here.
Skill practice
Then the class spends focused time on a skill or strength piece. This is where the coaching really shows. Your coach breaks the movement down, watches you do it, and adjusts. On your first day, this section is built around you learning positions safely, not chasing weight. Technique first is not a slogan — it is literally the structure of your first class.
The workout
The main workout usually takes up the middle-to-back portion of the hour. Here is the part beginners worry about most, so let us be direct: every workout is scaled to your level. The coach will have already set you up with a version that matches where you are today — lighter weight, simpler movements, adjusted volume. You will work hard at your own edge, not someone else's. The person next to you is doing the same thing at their edge, which is why the room cheers for the last person to finish, not the first.
Cleanup and wrap-up
The hour ends the way it started: together. Everyone puts equipment away, the coach checks in on how it felt, and you walk out the door knowing exactly what you did and why. Total time commitment: one hour, door to door.

Common first-class questions
Do I need to be in shape before I start? No. This is the most common worry and the least necessary one. The scaling system exists precisely so that beginners and experienced athletes can train in the same room. The barrier was never motivation — it was never having a plan built for a full calendar, and a one-hour coached class is designed for exactly that.
Will I be the only new person? Unlikely — new members join every week, and the coaches have been welcoming first-timers since 2012. Either way, the coach's job is to guide you through the hour, and the community here has earned more than 500 five-star reviews largely because of how it treats newcomers.
What if I have an old injury? Tell your coach before class. Scaling covers this too — movements can be modified around what your body can do today.
Can my kids train too? Yes. Ardmore runs youth classes on Tuesday and Thursday at 6:30pm, plus Sunday sessions for Juniors and Teens at 12:45pm, with programs for ages 3 and up.
